How to Celebrate Pentecost/Shavuot!

What is Pentecost/Savu’ot! When is it and how do we celebrate it?—are the most common questions we’ve been getting.

“Pentecost,” or in Hebrew “Shavu’ot” literally means weeks, because it occurs exactly seven weeks from the Exodus, roughly seven weeks from Passover. And it continues the Exodus story…

Shavu’ot starts sundown/evening June 11, and lasts for one day. It is also a day of rest (Lev 23:21). Outside of Israel, it’s traditionally celebrated for an extra day.

Moses and the People of Israel received the Revelation of the Ten Commandments, first spoken by ALMIGHTY YAHUVEH (YAHWEH) HIMSELF on this day (Ex 19-20). This is also the day when through the Blood of YAHUSHUA, Hebrew for JESUS, the Covenant was Renewed in the RUACH HA KODESH, Hebrew for HOLY SPIRIT (Acts 2).

Both on the very same day! Just like we “relive” Passover when we celebrate Passover—in a similar way, we relive Pentecost/Shavu’ot when we celebrate it, namely with prayer and studying the Torah.

AmightyWind Ministries is a Messianic Jewish Pentecostal Ministry, and as such, we believe all the miracles of Pentecost and all the Ten Commandments of Shavu’ot are still for today! Truly Pentecost and Shavu’ot are one and the same—just two different names that we’re using interchangeably.

How-To Celebrate!

Now, how do we celebrate Pentecost? In a nutshell, on Shavu’ot we tarry in prayer, in the Word of GOD and expect a greater Anointing and Infilling of the RUACH HA KODESH (although this does NOT mean we try to manufacture the move of GOD, or force the gift of tongues etc! which can result in counterfeit manifestations).

With the innocence and love of a child, we are to ask our HEAVENLY FATHER, that our SAVIOR, will Baptize us in more of the HOLY SPIRIT, and the true Anointing shall be given to us (Luke 11:9-13).

If you need help getting started on how to celebrate, here you go!

Traditions
  • Torah/Bible study (especially on Shavu’ot Eve)
  • Tarrying in prayer & reverent worship in one accord
  • Rejoicing & feasting
  • Less important (optional): eating dairy & fruit, decorating with greenery, baskets, fruit & flowers etc. and other symbols of the TORAH like crowns, or the HOLY SPIRIT like doves etc. Shavu’ot is also called the “Day of Firstfruits,” Yom HaBikkurim (Num 28:26), not to be confused with the time at Passover which is also translated as ‘Firstfruits’ Reshit Katsir, lit. “Start of the Harverst” (Lev 23:9-12).
  • Singing songs of praise!
Praying for Pentecost

The most important thing is to pray as YAH (GOD) leads you! If you don’t know what to pray, think of the Scriptures listed below.

Prayer is not something that man can teach us to do, but only GOD HIMSELF, through the HOLY SPIRIT (Jn 4:21-24). However, we can take examples from Scripture, such as from the Psalms—or check out the Heavenly Manna series. (We will be teaching the LORD’S Prayer in Hebrew soon as many have requested!)

You can click this link to hear our Pastor, Prophet Elisabeth’s anointed Pentecost prayer time from 2005, which contains Prophetic promises which are even more relevant today! We are in the process of finishing the transcription!

We also encourage you to pray as you read the below Scriptures and stand on the promises found in them during your Pentecost prayer times.

Studying Shavu’ot Scriptures

Here are our suggestions for your Shavu’ot Torah studies. This is mostly for your personal study, not necessarily an all night group marathon! (And you don’t necessarily have to read them all! You can read and study in a group, or sit together as a group, but read and study individually. Perhaps a combination of the two, however the RUACH HA KODESH leads!)

Suggested Scriptures
  • Mount Sinai – Exodus 19:3-19
  • The Ten Commandments – Exodus 20, Exodus 24:1-4
  • Renewed Shavu’ot – 2 Corinthians 3:3-6; Hebrew 12:18-29; Acts 1-2
  • Fruit of the SPIRIT – Romans 8:1-32, Galatians 5:15-6:9
  • Megillat Ruth The Scroll/Book of Ruth
Key Verses & Questions
  • “Everything the LORD has said we will do” – Acts 1:4-5 & Acts 2:38-39; Exodus 19:7; 24:3; Ruth 3:5; Hebrews 12:28-29; Gal 6:9
  • Unity & Authority – Acts 1:14; 2:1; Joshua 1:7-9, 16-18; Ruth 1:16; 3:5

How do the “Suggested Scriptures” relate to Pentecost//Shavuot? What do we learn, especially from the “Key Verses,” about what to do on this Holy Day?

There is a tradition to stay up all night on the evening of Shavu’ot in prayer and study. However, there is also a Biblical commandment to rejoice that day (Deut 16:11), so part of the tradition is also that if you are tired, you can sleep in order to wake rested and continue celebrating in the morning, “when the day of Pentecost [will have] fully come” (Acts 2:1)!

YAH wants us to know, “EVERY DAY should be a DAY of PENTECOST! EVERY DAY I want to fill you with MY POWER! EVERY DAY I want to speak to ye’!” (Prophecy 77)

So don’t let your celebrations end with the Day of Pentecost/Shavu’ot!

Part of our Statement of Faith reads,

YAHUSHUA uses the RUACH HA KODESH to baptize us with HOLY GHOST1 FIRE as in the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2). We believe in speaking in Holy Tongues and all the Gifts of the RUACH HA KODESH. We believe in the Baptism in the RUACH HA KODESH, according to Acts 2:4 {They were all filled with the HOLY GHOST, and began to speak with other tongues, as the SPIRIT gave them utterance} and that [the Baptism] is given to believers who ask for it and believe they receive it by faith.

1HOLY GHOST – archaic way of saying “HOLY SPIRIT” (in Hebrew RUACH HA KODESH).

Even after Pentecost, don’t hesitate to ask any questions about Pentecostal doctrines or about Holy Tongues, the Gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT, testing the spirit that speaks or anything similar, and we’ll do our best to answer them as YAH leads in HIS Timing!
